Near the beginning of A New Hope, Luke and Obi-Wan are looking for help to get off their home planet. As they pull up to a bar, Luke asks the obvious question.
“Do you really think we’re going to find a pilot here that’ll take us to Alderaan?
Obi-Wan wisely replies, “Well, most of the best freighter pilots can be found here. Only watch your step. This place can be a little rough.”
Luke – part frustration, part anger and part determination – returns with, “I’m ready for anything.”
Where would YOU go looking for a good pilot? A seedy bar of course! There’s a joke: How do you know a fighter pilot is in the room? He’s about to come tell you 😉 A pilot needs a lot of training to be able to fly a plane, or in this case, a spacecraft. Many hours of memorization and learning how the ship and the world around it works in unison. With enough schooling, a lot of people could fly a plane. But there’s something more to it. A certain attitude and bravado can’t be taught, and that is what makes a great pilot – one that can make things happen, one that can risk disaster and save the universe.
Luke may say he’s ready for anything but he’s probably not ready to handle anything. That naivete though will go a long way. He’s got the guts to take on the world. He will need that for flying and for so much more taking on the Dark Side. If you find yourself on a naive journey, cut yourself a break and go with it. Maybe you are ready for anything.
