After Obi-Wan rescues Luke , C3PO and R2D2 in the beginnings of A New Hope, they make a stop at Obi-Wan’s habitat where he pulls out a special gift.
“Which reminds me. I have something here for you.” Obi-Wan interjects. “Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn’t allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damned fool idealistic crusade, just like your father did.”
“What is it?” Luke asks anxiously.
“Your father’s light sabre.” Obi-Wan replies. “This is the weapon of a Jedi knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster.” Luke fires it up and swings it carefully. “An elegant weapon for a more civilized day.” Luke continues to warm up with the light sabre, following the path he curves.
“For over a thousand generations the Jedi knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic.” Ben pauses to add, “Before the dark times. Before the Empire.”
Was there really a time before the dark times? Can you remember a time before the dark times in your own life? The pre-quels give us the back story to the Empire, but there’s always a bad guy. There’s always a struggle between good and bad. There’s always someone who doesn’t think their portion is enough. They want more and to get more, they’ve got to take it from someone else. They’ve got to push someone else down to get up. It’s dark and ugly.
But these dark forces aren’t the only ones unsatisfied with the status quo. Some imagine greater things and they fight to create them. They want more but they raise the tides to lift all boats. These creators think that if they can improve their own lot, they can make it happen for so many more. This is the Light.
Light. Dark. The Balance.
