Very early into A New Hope, C3PO and R2D2 have escaped Darth Vader by marooning themselves on a desert planet. After a heated argument, they’ve gone their separate ways through the sand dunes only to reunite in the captivity of scavenger junkmen. Uncle Owen and Luke have purchased C3PO but left R2 behind when suddenly the other droid collapses in a poof of smoke and bleeps. (I can’t help but think R2 had something to do with it, although there’s no back-story to suggest it.)
C3PO speaks up to his new masters to pick R2D2 as a replacement for the damaged droid.
“Uh, I’m quite sure you’ll be very pleased with that one, sir. “ He quickly adds, “He really is in first-class condition. I’ve worked with him before.”
After the switch transaction is complete, C3PO admonishes R2D2 aside, “Now, don’t you forget this! Why I should stick my neck out for you is quite beyond my capacity!”
Does this sound like one of your friendships? Yes, they’re droids but they’re programmed out of humans to be functional with humans. Some of that rubbed off into bickering. These two will make it through a lot together yet to come. They will be the closer for it too – whatever “closer” looks like or means to droids.
As humans, we do argue and bicker and get into trouble. And we also get each other out of trouble. Being a good friend also means being there for the disappointments and the rejections. A good friend sees through the angry words and distant emotions because they believe the pain behind those actions can be overcome. Have you been fighting with someone lately? Take off the gloves and try listening a little harder or maybe throw in a hug. The stress of saving the universe gets a bit overwhelming at times. Remember to be there for each other.
