“These five pieces are worth…let me see here.” Unkar Plutt assesses Rey as he determines what to provide.
“One half portion.” He decries.
Rey calmly replies, “Last week they were a half portion each.”
“What about the droid?” he dismisses her comment.
“What about him?” she counters.
“I’ll pay for him.” Reaching beneath the counter to his wealth of supply, he pulls forth handfuls of allotments, banging them down on the counter with effect ”Sixty portions.”
The line of petitioners gasp. This is an unheard of offer with a likely never seen before amount of food.
Rey reaches forth and gathers the supply under her arms, but then hesitates.
“Actually, the droid’s not for sale.” She finally responds.
Wow. For a scavenger that hunts for her food every day, sixty portions would mean a great deal of security. She could rest. She would have a store resources for when times get hard. She could breath perhaps a bit more fully knowing that hunger wasn’t so close.
But she doesn’t take the windfall. She chooses to keep BB8, and we don’t think it’s because she has more lucrative designs. She knows the easy handout is not worth it.
The universe does give us gifts. We should receive them with joy and gratitude. Rey realizes the gift was BB8, not the bounty on his head. What gifts have you received recently? Are you using them wisely and not just taking the easy way out?
