Find yourself wandering around the end of the Internet (again)? Of course, you weren’t looking for the end of the Internet but you started with asking the Oracle (Google) a valid question in search of knowledge of great pertinence and value in your work or life … and then you’re out there.
That crazy cat video.
The fray of a conversation thread you were into a week ago.
An obscure reference to a question you had a month ago (but didn’t find the answer because you got distracted).
Shopping for flights/hotels/clothes/hobbies/cat toys … bargain anything and maybe some things you don’t need
With an internet of information available, it is easy to get lost. It’s both magnificent to explore … unfettered and … unproductive? What is the right balance of search and “find”? What are you doing on your computer? Your computer may track your email and web crawling, but what are you getting done?
There’s an app for that.
Rescuetime downloads to your computer and with a couple clicks, tracks what you are doing there.
Ready?
Are you ready for Big Brother to watch over your shoulder? Perhaps you are a quant type? More information is better in any measure. Perhaps you are missing deadlines or goals? Several methods and other simpler apps can help, but this is a wide-ranging tool on what is likely your most tangible connection to your productivity.
How much time do you spend replying emails? Twitter/Facebook/Linked in? Where are you spending your time? What are you accomplishing? Are you making progress?
The set up is easy and your direction tells Rescuetime what is productive or non-productive and some ends up in neutral. That part is easy but the better data will require you to tweak the killer category – uncategorized. (That’s what got me when my Mac Book storage filled up.)
As with any Big Data application, Rescuetime is going to provide information in detail you can’t capture manually. It’s going to tell you what you are doing. It’s up to you to decipher where the wheat and chaff are.
